He weaned
I'm a lurker who has posted occasionally in the past. I wanted to
post here because I'm so full of emotions and there are only a couple of people in my life who understand extended nursing. My son is 3.5 years old, and I think he weaned this week. For the first 3 years of his life he nursed a LOT, but when he turned 3 I worked hard to get him down to 3 times a day. Then 2. He was really ok with all that, but still asked at his usual times. When I cut out another session so we were just nursing in the morning, he suddenly decided he was done altogether. I imagined we'd nurse once a day for several months before he ended it. It's funny, because I really thought I was ready, and I suppose I really am, but I feel so sad too. I'm proud and glad, and love that my big boy is feeling more independent, but it's still hard. I just really hope he did this because of his own feelings and not because he felt pressured to, by me ending the pre-nap session. We talked about it quite a lot and he said he's just done. One cute thing he said was that "nursie milk tastes like chocolate milk." I feel so lucky and blessed that I got to nurse him for so long. I just wish he'd nurse one more last time so I could try to will my brain to remember everything about it. Thanks for reading, and being a source of support as I feverishly googled this group any time I had a problem. -Lora (email address doesn't work, reply to group please.) |

Your son sounds like he was ready to wean. You have done so well to last so long and the two of you will carry the health benefits of breastfeeding for life. It is an emotional time when they wean. I think it is wonderful when your nursling can articulate how much they love their breastmilk. Your little boy is growing up! Larissa DD bf for 18m DS bf for 24m DD2 bf for 26m |

It's always a bittersweet time when they wean, as much as you may wish they would before they do! It makes them seem so much older. Congratulations for nursing him for so long! Leslie |

My DS (2.5 y) had his last bf about a week ago - he was more than ready to wean, I'm still adjusting to not being pregnant or breastfeeding anymore You've done so well though - it really is great that *they've* decided when to wean. Well done you Amanda |

Well done you Amanda Thanks amanda. I'm adjusting day by day. He actually did ask to nurse one last time, and it was just for a minute or so, and after that I remembered that I really was ready to wean. :-p It is strange not to count myself among the club of breastfeeding women, but I think maybe it's a club that once you join you have permanent membership. -Lora |

I'll adjust to this, just as I've adjusted to the bittersweet passing of each previous stage. I wish the first few years could last longer! -Lora |

He does seem older now, a true big kid. I think the last photo I have of him nursing is when he was about 2.5, which seems sad to me as we are picture people and I missed a year of documentation. :-) Ah well, I have my memories. -Lora |

There were a few nights when I just felt such a clutching in my chest when thinking about it, but then, I've never been good at change or moving on. I look at him now though and he just seems so big, and I know he was ready. -Lora |
