Ritalin-Preschoolers

[starts off with WARNING!]

Excerpts:

The question of whether Ritalin, a drug to treat ADHD, should be prescribed
to preschoolers was the object of a government organized study in the US.
This study was initiated because of growing concern over pre=schoolers being
administered psychiatric drugs.

This has come under severe fire from several psychiatrists who feel this
conclusion was reached to aid the drug companies who were funding the
researchers. The actual results of the study also seemed to point in the
same direction. The study began with 300 families for 10 weeks of behavioral
treatment coupled with parent training. This was followed by 70 weeks of
drug treatment.

Over half the participants opted out of the program after the first 10
weeks, some because the behavioral treatment was effective and the others
because they were reluctant about the usage of drugs on their little
children. 165 children started the drug treatment but 40 per cent opted out
because of side effects, another 11 per cent because of weight loss and
stunted growth.

For the record Ritalin is authorized for only children above the age of 6
but it is not considered illegal to prescribe it for younger children

Default Ritalin-Preschoolers

In the November issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and
Adolescent Psychiatry, there are a lot of articles on the use of ADHD meds
in preschoolers.

You can click on "Online Advance Publicaion" in the upper right-hand part of
the page to get the free articles.

I will comment on the article after I have read them.

I can almost tell what you will say.

There is no justification for giving them Schedule II stimulant medications.

Blackmailing Parents To Keep Kids On Drugs
By Vin Suprynowicz

About that "zero drug tolerance" policy in our schools: Does it really mean
what it says? Or would it come closer to the truth for school administrators
to admit what they really oppose are pushers offering competing
consciousness-altering substances?

Do our public schools today constitute a kind of official, tax-supported
dope monopoly, which will even threaten to take children away from parents
should they refuse to go along with the mind-numbing nostrums which our
schoolmasters themselves now press on nearly a quarter of our young boys?

The Albany Times Union, in a May 7, 2000 story, tells what happened to
parents Michael and Jill Carroll of Albany, N.Y., when they tried to take
their son, 7-year-old Kyle, off Ritalin. Kyle Carroll was first prescribed
Ritalin last year, after he fell behind at school. Teachers drew up an
Individualized Education Plan, a standard course of action for children with
"special needs." But last fall, when Kyle started second grade, the Ritalin
didn't seem to be doing much good. Furthermore, the Carrolls grew concerned
that Kyle was only sleeping about five hours a night and eating just one
meal a day--lunch. So they told school officials they wanted to take Kyle
off the Ritalin for two weeks to see if that helped.

That's when they got a call, and then a visit, from a Child Protective
Services worker, based on a complaint from Kyle's school guidance counselor.
The charge? "Child abuse," in the form of "medical neglect." In plain
English? Expressing doubts about keeping their child on dope.

As a result, the Times Union reports, the Carrolls are now on a statewide
list of alleged child abusers, and find themselves "thrust into an Orwellian
family court battle to clear their name and ensure their child isn't removed
from their home." The child remains on the medication, "in part because they
fear child welfare workers will take him away if they don't," the Albany
daily reports.

Furthermore, the Albany paper found the Carrolls' case is far from unique,
reporting: "Public schools are increasingly accusing parents of child abuse
and neglect if they balk at giving their children medication such as
Ritalin, a stimulant being prescribed to more and more students." The
American Academy of Pediatrics reports as many as 3.8 million
schoolchildren, mostly boys, have now been diagnosed with the newly-coined
"ADHD"--attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder--a psychiatric "disease,"
with symptoms to which most of our grandparents would have responded by
simply smiling, "Boys will be boys." At least a million children now take
Ritalin for this "disorder."

"This thing is so scary," says Patricia Weathers, of Millbrook, a suburb of
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Officials at the Millbrook school district called police
and child protective services when she took her 9-year-old son, Michael
Mozer, off medications earlier this year. Weathers reported her child's
prescribed drug cocktail--including Ritalin, the anti-depressant Paxil, and
Dexedrine (another stimulant, like Ritalin)--caused her boy, now attending a
private school, to hallucinate.

NewsMax.com- Every day some 6 million children - some as young as 2 or 3 -
are now given Ritalin and other stimulants at the urging of school officials
and psychiatrists. The reason: They are diagnosed with Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a recently discovered mental "disease" whose
symptoms include short attention span, impulsive behavior, and difficulty
sitting still.

Many more boys than girls are diagnosed with ADHD. In some schools -
including two school districts near Virginia Beach, Virginia - as many as 20
percent of the boys are now given Ritalin daily.

The strongest advocates of drugging children are the Department of
Education, educational bureaucrats and psychiatrists. The U.S. consumes over
90 percent of Ritalin produced in the world. What bureaucrats don't tell
parents, however, is that Ritalin has effects similar to amphetamines and is
listed by the Drug Enforcement Agency as a Schedule II controlled substance.

Despite these problems, bureaucrats often insist that "ADHD children" be
given Ritalin and other drugs. Parents who resist are increasingly being
threatened with charges of child abuse and threats of having their children
taken away from them. For instance:

In Albany, New York, Michael and Jill Carroll were charged with child abuse
when they told school officials they wanted to take their 7-year-old son,
Kyle, off Ritalin. They are now on a statewide list of child abusers.

In California, Dr. Robert Sinaiko had his medical license revoked and was
fined $99,000 by an administrative law judge for taking a boy off Ritalin
and prescribing alternative treatment.

In Millbrook, New York, officials in the Millbrook school district called
police and child protective services when Patricia Weathers took her
9-year-old son, Michael, off Ritalin and other government-prescribed drugs.
Dr. Peter Breggin, founder of the Center for the Study of Psychiatry, raises
many chilling questions about the consequences of drugging millions of
children, in his recent book, "Talking Back to Ritalin." Breggin states:

1. The number of children being drugged has increased sevenfold in the last
few years.

2. Ritalin and amphetamines (like crystal meth and other illegal street
drugs) have almost identical adverse effects on the mind and behavior,
including drug-induced behavioral disorders, psychosis, mania, drug abuse
and addiction.

3. A large percentage of children who take Ritalin and other stimulants
become robotic, lethargic, depressed or withdrawn.

4. Ritalin can retard growth in children by disrupting the cycles of growth
hormone released by the pituitary gland.

5. Ritalin is addictive and can become a gateway drug to other addictions.

6. There is no solid evidence that ADHD is a genuine disorder or disease of
any kind.

Dr. Breggin also explains that Ritalin is so harmful that the U.S. military
rejects applications from young men who have been taking it.

Dr. Breggin is part of a rising chorus of medical authorities and
psychologists who oppose the wholesale drugging of children. Dr. Kevin
McCready of the San Joaquin Psychotherapy Center is particularly outspoken
in his opposition to the growing use of drugs on children:

"The massive drugging of children in America is an absolute scandal. ADHD is
a myth, and an excuse to drug children to make them more easily manageable -
with no thought about the long-term mental and health consequences for the
children.

"Millions of children are being conditioned to take drugs thanks to their
daily dose of Ritalin, Prozac and other drugs. Uncle Sam is now the world's
#1 drug pusher."

Dr. McCready advocates dealing with child behavior problems through an
innovative psychological approach that involves neither drugging nor
coercion.
