Am I risking it?

In most of the movie, she's actually called Briar Rose because the fairies are trying to hide her from Maleficent. But there's lots and lots of Disney merchandise out there referring to her as Princess Aurora. I have to say that my daughter is such a girly girl (where did *that* come from g?) and loves princesses and princessy things so much that she is delighted to have the same name as a princess. I truly couldn't have named her more appropriately. In Grimm's fairy tales (translated from the German), of which I happen to have a copy, the Sleeping Beauty is referred to only as "the Princess" or "Briar Rose." She was called Briar Rose after the hedge of roses grew up around the castle after she and everyone in it fell asleep when she pricked her finger. It doesn't seem to have been her "given" name. I'm not sure when or how the name "Aurora" came to be associated with the Sleeping Beauty, but it isn't in Grimm. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure it predates Disney. This got me curious, so I did a little poking around on the Net and it looks like the name Aurora was first given to Sleeping Beauty in the Tchaikovsky ballet. Which, of course, makes it all the *more* appropriate as a name for my little girl, who is fascinated with ballet and loves her Saturday ballet lessons. A princess with ballet origins--nope, it couldn't be any more appropriate! -- Be well, Barbara Mom to Sin (Vernon, 2), Misery (Aurora, 4), and the Rising Son (Julian, 6) Aurora (in the bathroom with her dad)--"It looks like an elephant, Daddy." Me (later)--"You should feel flattered." All opinions expressed in this post are well-reasoned and insightful. Needless to say, they are not those of my Internet Service Provider, its other subscribers or lackeys. Anyone who says otherwise is itchin' for a fight. -- with apologies to Michael Feldman |

What's your opinion about a baby girl's name 'Avanti'? I absolutely love the name. It has a nice meaning in quite a few languages. It is a brand of cheap electricals here in Australia ( ie: toasters, heaters etc ) -- Proudly presenting Bébé B Born 20.Apr.2004 |

Am I risking it?

Although the brand might be defunct by then, and you never know what will happen in the future. I once knew a girl called Fleur. No doubt her parents thought it was both unusual and pretty (it's French for flower) when they gave her the name. When the poor girl was in her teens, some company started making Fleur tampons. Now how can you anticipate *that*? -- Chookie -- Sydney, Australia (Replace "foulspambegone" with "optushome" to reply) "Life is like a cigarette -- smoke it to the butt." -- Harvie Krumpet |
