Florida DCF Kicks Off Adoption Month
Florida DCF Kicks Off Adoption Month
TALLAHASSEE--The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) has kicked off a month-long campaign to encourage more adults in the state to consider adopting a child in foster care. In keeping with the 'No Place Like Home' initiative, Gov. Jeb Bush signed a formal proclamation declaring November as Adoption Month in Florida making this an excellent opportunity to draw special attention to waiting children. "In the wake of Hurricane Wilma, we see ordinary people coming together to do extraordinary things," said DCF Secretary Lucy Hadi. "But even on an ordinary day, you can still be remarkable by adopting a child in foster care. Currently 3,565 children in Florida are eligible and awaiting adoption. To children without parents, the most important thing an adoptive parent can do is provide a stable, safe and loving home that these children can call their own." The department is also asking media to help share the message with the public by airing public service announcements entitled, "You don't have to be a hero to be a hero," and by publishing articles and editorials raising awareness to adults of the need for adoptive parents. If being a hero to a foster child is the right fit for you, you can find more information by logging on to DCF's Web site at http://www.dcf.state.fl.us/adoption/. You can also call 1-800-96-ADOPT. DCF and its community-based partners are hosting a wide range of events across the state this month to encourage adults to consider adopting a child out of foster care. On Nov. 19, numerous multi-family adoptions will take place throughout Florida. Secretary Hadi will attend one of these events at 10:30 a. m. in Tallahassee at the Leon County Courthouse. Other events occurring throughout the state this month include Heart Gallery Exhibits, breakfasts, picnics and more. Through continuous efforts of our community-based care partners, Florida has made great strides in reuniting families and in finding "forever families" for children who cannot return to their biological families. For the third consecutive year, Florida has led the nation in finding adoptive parents for its foster children. These placement efforts have been recognized with an incentive award from the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services. This year that amounted to $3.5 million. 11-07-05 http://www.northcountrygazette.org/a...loridaDCF.html Defend your civil liberties!
