Default Weird advice from French doc regarding mastitis

A Danish friend of mine living in France has a wife who currently has a
mild mastitis.

She's been told to stop nursing for a WEEK (the child is less than two
months old) and use antibiotics.

She's also been told, that she shouldn't nurse, because the baby could
catch the infection.

Isn't this plain rubbish?

A week without nursing would kill the mom (ouch!!!), give more mastitis
(if the breast cannot be properly emptied) and ruin the nursing schedule
IMNSHO.

Am I right?

Or is my knowledge old-fashioned and the doc is right??

Totally.

Vice versa.

I take it you have passed correct advice on urgently to your friend's wife?

All the best,

Sarah

I passed the advice to my friend and he in turn passed it to his wife.

Nice to hear I'm not completely crazy

Hey, I just looked it up and there's a translation of my personal
favourite breastfeeding book:
Here's the link to the english version:
http://www.under-the-rainbow.de/stil...eding_usa.html
There's a link to the version available in the Netherlands:
http://www.under-the-rainbow.de/stil...eeding_nl.html

I'm sorry, I don't know if the version for the netherlands would be ok
as I have no clue about how similar the languages are.

The book is very good (in my oppinion). It offers a lot of advice for
breastfeeding problems. I don't know if there's a french translation, I
haven't found anything on google, but there's so many links... Maybe the
husband can order it online via amazon or check a local bookshop?

you're right, it's the doc that is old fashioned, even if the baby could
catch the infection it would still likely be better to breastfeed and
treat the baby (unless they were already compromised in someway) simply
to make sure the benefits of breastfeeding are met in the long term,
very few people would go back after stopping for a week. Lots of good
sources of information explain why not to stop feeding and mention that
this used to be the advice.

Luckily both of them reads and speaks English fluently. Thanks for the
links - I'll pass them on.
