Default before you knew you were pregnant??

Before I knew I was pregnant, I wasn't a saint. I even went on a trip
to Vegas with friends within the first 2 weeks of pregnancy. I wasn't
planning on getting pregnant, and didn't think I would because I was
on the pill. But, things do happen, and now, I'm very excited that
I'lll be having a little girl this fall. Sometimes I get nervous about
some of the things I did before knowing I was pregnant (I didn't know
the first month). I even spoke to my doctor about it, and he said many
woman go through this and they go on to have healthy babies. I just
want to know if anyone has any thoughts on this issue. I've take great
care of myself since I've known of my pregnancy and things look good. I
have faith that my little girl is healthy. Has anyone experienced this?

Did you just drink alot? Or were there drugs involved? I can only speak
from experience - I drank a couple times excessively during my first
pregnancy (before I knew) and my daughter turned out very healthy.

I'm not sure if this is much consolation, but the first few weeks of
gestation are called the "all or nothing" period. This means that the
embryo cannot survive much damage, so basically teratogenic exposures will
either kill the embryo or have no effect.
http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/410896_2
Relevant quote:
"either the agent affects enough cells to result in embryolethality or so
few cells are affected that the embryo is able to effectively repair
itself."

What this means for you is that chances are whatever you did in Vegas stayed
in Vegas. (couldn't resist)

If a personal story helps, my SIL was on the pill and got pregnant. She
found out a few months into it, to her surprise. So, she drank alcohol,
took birth control pills, and probably ate terribly and was under a lot of
stress. She has a beautiful little girl. That's a typical story. Not to
say that exposures aren't a big deal, because certainly they can be, but
generally "incidental" exposures like drinking too much a couple of times in
the first couple of weeks are rarely if ever a problem. Chronic alcoholism
or illegal drug use is a problem.

If things were a little more complicated than too many martinis in Vegas,
you may want to talk to a teratogen information service. Here's a link that
can help you find the one in your area:

Best wishes,
Amy

In my last pregnancy I did not have my diabetes under good control
during the first 2 weeks after conception (until 4 weeks LMP). Even
though I already knew that most deformities caused from diabetes
happened in the organ formation period (from 5 to 8 weeks lmp), I was
still pretty paranoid the entire pg about it. My dd was thankfully
born perfectly healthy!
