"I am afraid that schools will prove to be wide gates to hell unless
they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures, engraving them

in the hearts of youth. I advise no one to place his child where the
Scriptures do not reign paramount. Every institution in which men are
not constantly occupied with the Word of God must become corrupt."

Martin Luther

in this case, i suspect Martin Luther's
he did start his own flavor of Catholicism, although it's
lumped in with Protestant religions now, he *was* trying to
"reform" the Catholic church & Lutheranism is pretty much
"Catholic Lite".
lee reformed Lutheran, now agnostic

It is such a shame that as far as we have come as a country in regards
to "equal rights" and respect of individuals from all walks of life, we
still find it okay to think that only "one" religion is acceptable.
None of us would speak openly of discrimination to a person of a
different race, different ability levels in cognition, different bodily
appearance that they were born with, and yet it is still acceptable to
speak of intolerance with others religious beliefs. We should all
teach our children what we feel is morally right while providing them
information on all religions. Is it not true that all relgions focus
around being the best human being that a person can be? Is this not
the MOST important concept to teach our children?

Well, no, that's the problem - all religions do NOT teach people
that their primary goal is to be the best person they can be. I would
posit that most religions focus on being the best servant of god/goddess/
ball of noodly pasta/etc that you can be. Quite often, this focus comes
into direct conflict with Humanist teachings. Just look at some of
the more popular religions - some of them even give you the world's
greatest get-out-of-jail card - you can spend your life being the
worst monster on the face of the earth, but hey, find some faith,
even at the last moment, and you're scot-free. Some, in both
historical and modern contexts, actively encourage assaults, war,
and everything in between, under various pretexts.

Now, that being said, I fully believe that most people of
a religious bent want to try to be the best *people*, rather
than servant, that they can be, even if that conflicts with
explicit or implicit dogma, because they see that as one
way of honoring their favorite deity. But unfortunately, that
isn't always the case. In some regions I've visited, it's
actually considered to be a point of considerable honor
and accomplishment when the "wrong" people - i.e., minorities,
some other religion, etc - are persecuted.

yeah, well, Luther was from an entirely different time &
place. he also thought the Catholic Church was corrupt, so i
guess even institutions that *are* "constantly occupied" can
also be corrupt?

Actually, I think that was the point he was making -- that the Catholic Church
was not sufficiently occupied with the Word of God and had become corrupt as a
result.

I don't think the OP quite realises that education was conducted somewhat
differently in Luther's time!
