I took the plunge! Will see a midwife!

What an awesome thing for a doctor to say!!! My doctor (at a birth) told my doula (while discussing options during the birth) that even after all of his schooling and experience that doctors really don't know much of anything, that pregnancy and childbirth are still very mcuh a mystery. I thought it was awesome for a doctor to admit that. Granted he's very knowledgable, at least as mcuh a person can be about pregnancy/child-birth. I think this is true in just about any field--those with the most knowledge are usually the quickest to admit how much is unknown. Best wishes, Ericka |

There are not many but they *are* out there. I was seen by one during the post-natal visits. Very nice chap, told me all about his wife's BFing problems g, and he said they are actively trying to encourage more men into the profession but that most patients are visibly surprised to see them and that reaction puts students off. :-( Don't see why, since there must be more male OBs than female out there, thanks to history and circumstances. Why is a male midwife any worse than a male OB? If there was ever a HFC#2 I would have no qualms about a male midwife at any stage. Jac |

Well I actually made an appointment with the local midwives' group! I'm very excited about it. They sound totally willing to work with me and to listen to me. Yay! :-) I made the appointment *now* (i.e. only half way through the first trimester) because I read somewhere online that Ontario midwives are usually fully booked, and that you should schedule your first appointment as soon as you find out that you're pregnant. As it turns out, I barely squeezed in (phew!). You're lucky! I live about 30 min N of Toronto ON, and the local midwife practice was full up and couldn't take me even though I called them just **three days after my missed period**!!! (Fortunately, after a week of panic, I found another relatively-nearby midwifery practice able to fit me in, although their office and the hospital where they have privileges is 50 min from our house. But, the midwives there are really great) So, word to the wise for any not-yet-pregnant Ontarioans who may be reading this - if you want a midwife, do your HPTs earlier rather than later and call the instant the second pink line appears :-P I think it is SO cool that OHIP (Ontario's provincial health care system) covers midwife care, though. That just blows my mind. Congrats and good luck, Pat |
