Default Baby washcloths...and burp cloths

I had already decided not to use these even though I know people can't
resist giving them to you at showers etc...I was planning on using cloth
diapers for this purpose.

Someone just gave me a large laundry basket of secondhand baby washcloths- I
swear there are like 50 of them- and a lot of burp cloths too. (Also a few
cloth diapers)...

Probably by the time I have my shower I will have about 100 baby wash
cloths. I'm not being sarcastic, I am just wondering really, why people are
so gung-ho over baby wash cloths? It doesn't seem like people in this group
are, but everyone I know otherwise considers them essentials. Sure they're
small and soft. but they're SMALL! For wiping drool and spit up cloth
diapers would be much better. Same goes for burp cloths. The way their
shaped I find cloth diapers to be more practical and multi-use.

Probably depends on how much they spit up. Neither mine have spit up much. I
had 16 burp clothes for #1-and didn't use half. I'm using 5 with #2. One by
computer (I'm feeding now) one on her sheet where her head goes, one by my
bed (where I feed the night feed) and one on sofa downstairs (most feeds).
Every wash I wash one and all the cloths get moved down a dirty space! The
new cloth goes on the sheet, and that one moves to where the most dirty
other cloth is. The one by the computer is hardly used!

Diapers are better for drool and spit up. Baby wash cloths are better for
washing baby creases and crevices. I find DS and DD were so small as
newborns, I couldn't get a regular size washcloth in the creases and
crevices well enough to get them clean. They needed the baby washcloths.
Right now, when DS gets a bath, he gets the thicker washcloths. When I
bathe DD, I hunt for the thin baby washcloths.

Hi, Jill~

If you would like to donate a few packages to me, I would be happy to
receive them.

They are perfectly sized to use as face wash clothes or cold cream type make
up removers. Because they are soft, they feel very good against your skin!

I don't have nary a 1 cloth diaper (can you believe it?). I did buy two
packages of the Kushies All in One diapers myself. But, I am shocked that I
didn't get even 1 fullsized cloth diaper. LOL! Guess everyone just assumed
I'd use disposable.

Yesterday, my mother and I had to get a gift for a girlfriend's daughter who
is having a boy. I decided to give her a 5 Pack package of Onsies
(purchased for the Onsie Puff Painting at the Shower), a Winnie the Pooh
burp cloth and a 2 Pack package of Bibs (won off eBay in a lot) to go along
with the Blue Jean Teddy clock I bought for her off eBay. My mother added
her gifts and we created a very large, impressive gift bag for her!

What I'm trying to say is, use the old wash clothes if you want and save the
new ones as gifts for others, exchange them or donate them.

Personally, I wouldn't think I would use a diaper to wipe my baby's face (in
public). But that's just me!!! I also didn't keep ANY of the burp clothes
that didn't "look" pretty. That will probably change.

I wonder if I'm a burp cloth snob?? ROFL!!

When are you showers????

I don't know what your friend used them for, but if you're cloth diapering,
baby washcloths make excellent butt wipes. :-) I can easily imagine 50+ of
them being useful for that.

We did use baby washcloths for bathing DS; I liked that they're small enough to
squeeze out one-handed. But we only owned half a dozen or so for that purpose
and it was plenty. Later we bought a few more to use, as others have
mentioned, for wiping toddler hands and face after meals. We keep them in the
kitchen with the bibs and dishcloths and they are all very stained and worn
now, so if I want any for bathing baby #2 I'll have to buy some new ones!

On burp cloths, I agree with you. We had a few cutesy ones but mostly used
cloth diapers, as well as receiving blankets, for spit-up and similar messes.
DS was a very spitty, leaky baby so larger cloths were definitely necessary.

Personally I wouldn't be without baby wash cloths. I use them for bathing,
wiping up at a diaper change and for teething (wet cloth, ring out and
freeze, perfect for little one to chew on). Of course you keep the ones you
use for teething separate from the ones you wipe thier butt with : D

DD was not spitty at all, so I never really needed burp clothes for burping
(and the decorative ones I got were so flimsy, I can't imagine they wiped
anything up!). I did always have a stash of cloth diapers around (the cheap
12 pack you can get at Babies R Us), for me, because I leaked so badly
from the opposite breast when DD nursed (nursing pads just didn't cut
it).

For spit up, cloth diapers and burp cloths are perfect. I wore one on each
shoulder for the first 3 or 4 months of my daughter's life. It was *very*
attractive. Particularly on those days when I not only had two burp cloths
on my shoulders, but I had forgotten to pull down the flaps on my nursing
tops. That was a look. Such a treat for the UPS guy.

But... baby washcloths are wonderful as newborn wipes - they're the perfect
size. And later on, they're wonderful for all the wiping you will do
incessantly around the house. Think of them as a substitute for paper
towels, only about a thousand times better, because they are softer and more
absorbent.

I think you'll find them very useful.

Jill,
I have 5-10 baby wash cloths, but I don't use them to wipe up baby after
spit up -- you are right, for that, a cloth diaper is better. But I do use
them for washing baby. In real life I prefer very thick and absorbent wash
cloths, and they are too thick and heavy to use to wash baby, at least to
me. So for me, I love and use my baby wash cloths, but do think that 100 is
a little over board!

I will keep this in mind! The wash cloths I have right now are all used and
a few look like new, some have some staining etc. If I do get a lot at my
showers, people will get them from all over and not just the place I
registered at so I would be more than happy to send you some! My shower at
work is March 31. They *are* soft, I can see using a few for my face, but I
definitely don't want many-- so I will let you know and be happy to send
them along!
