Milk supply question
Hi there. I have a DS who is almost 8 weeks old. Since he was 3
weeks, I've pumped his lunch so DH could give it to him. Over the last week or so he's been eating more at that feeding -- 5-6oz. However, in one pumping session, double pumping using a Medela pump-in-style, I tend to only get about 5oz total. That's not the problem, I can pump another time just a little and have enough for his lunch, my concern is that he's not getting enough to eat the rest of the feedings, at the breast. Yes, he wets plenty of diapers, and yes he is gaining weight fine, so I know he's eating ok -- but he nurses frequently. Anybody have any thoughts? |

Milk supply question
Could be a growth spurt and that is why he's nursing more often. If hes
having enough wet and poppy diapers than everything is alright. -- Laura Mommy to Izabella **Feb 10th, 2003** And 2 felines *Ashes(3) & George (5)* http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/i/izabellawelburn/ "Vicki" wrote in message . com... Common thought is that a pump isn't as good as a baby in getting the milk out. Thus how much you pump does not indicate how much milk you are making. 5 ounces for a pumping session is pretty good. At my peak (pumping at work, starting when DD was 12 weeks old), I would pump 8 ounces my morning session and 5-6 my afternoon session and I had an ample supply. Mary |

How much or how little you can get pumping bears no relevance to how much milk there is. If you let your son nurse as and when he wants to for as long as he wants to your supply will grow with his changing needs. It might be that he's wanting more as he's growing, you might need to increase your pumping time to match his new needs for that feed, but as I said, if you follow his cues he will already be communicating how much he needs at the breast and your milk supply will increase accordingly. You might watch out for bottle preference, if his bottle feed gets bigger and bigger and bigger. But Caterpillar often drinks more at a feeding than I can pump, part of which is that pumps aren't as efficient as babies. Phoebe -- yahoo address is unread - substitute mailbolt |
