Default Allergic Reaction?

Has anyone else had any experience with an allergic reaction to formula?
Alexandra had about 3 oz. of Enfamil Lipil and after the feeding just
'looked' sick, like she didn't feel well. About 20 minutes later her
little ears were bright red and under her chin was red and her face had
red blotches on it. Needless to say, I was VERY alarmed. I called her
ped. and she said as long as she isn't wheezing and it isn't getting
worse to just wait and keep an eye on her. It left almost as quickly as
it came and was completely gone in a half hour. She has been exclusively
bf up until now and had never taken a bottle until this incident. I
didn't have any EBM so I thought it would be ok to try the Enfamil.
WRONG! Has anyone else had his problem? What kind of formula could she
have if I decided to give her some again? Soy? Nutramigen? I am at a
loss. How much of a supply of BM could I pump in what length of time?
TIA!

Sounds like a classic allergic reaction to me.... my niece was like that
as a child... her sister spilt milk on her head, and where the milk
landed, she came up with red blotches and hives, etc. She was breastfed
too, and hadn't been exposed to cow's milk before. I'd advise you go
see an allergist after she's 1 or so to see what other stuff she's
allergic to. My niece is allergic to vegemite, and deathly allergic to
peanuts and other stuff. Strawberries give her alopecia! (she's now a
healthy 22 year old...). I'd try NOT to give her formula, or try some
kind of soy type one if you really really have to...

DD had one bottle of soy formula at about 1 month old and vomitted it all
immediately.

She is allergic to soy, dairy and egg (and reacted to all three on the first
go) and is now allergic to peanuts though it took her to age 6 to develop
that.

I don't plan on giving my next baby formula at all, ever.

Hmmm, sounds like something. Must have been scary. I'm assuming the Enfamil
Lipil is a milk based formula? Have you ever noticed her to be sensitive to
dairy that you eat? I don't think I'd do the same formula again, you should
really ask your ped.

Matthew is almost 100% EBM but does fine with the occasional supplement of
Nestle Good Start or even Similac Advance (using the free samples) when I've
run low or he's in a growth spurt and eating like crazy. He got very fussy
and had delayed bowel movements with lots of grunting when I tried the
Enfamil Lipil (twice). I threw the rest of the opened can away. FWIW.

Also FWIW, when I wasn't feeling well right after first coming home someone
tried to give R. Enfamil Lipil. She was just 2-3 days old and she wailed all
night inconsolably, and it seemed to really hurt her stomach. Fast forward
to the future when she started cereal and one day I didn't pump milk to mix
with it, again, someone used Enfamil Lipil to make her formula and we had
the same reaction. When I was trying to get her take a bottle (of formula,
when I didn't have any milk pumped and was trying to let someone else feed
her for me), she seemed to do ok on Nestle GoodStart. But she only took one
or two bottles and has never had once since. She won't take formula even in
a cup, and she won't take a bottle, even if it's juice, which she will take
in a cup.

I am WAY unimpressed with Enfamil Lipil. If I ever had to formula feed or
choose to formula feed a baby I would definitely use Nestle Good Start
DHA/ARA. It smells better and doesn't seem to mess up their tummy.

But in the OP's case I have no idea if it was an allergic reaction that
would cause a need for a special type of formula etc........just wanted to
say that I know a ton of formula feeding moms and don't know anyone who has
used Enfamil Lipil even though that is what all the pediatricians offices
here push. Nestle GoodStart seems to be the most liked, and I know people
who use various Similac and soy formulas. But no one seems to like the
Enfamil. I don't know why but I know why I didn't.

When I used formula I used Enfamil, but NOT with Lipil/DRA. That wasn't
invented when I had the girls. I like Enfamil with iron and had no problems.

That sure sounds like a classic allergic reaction to me! Probably to the
cow's milk that Enfamil Lipil is made from. I wouldn't give her any regular
milk-based formula at all with a reaction like that. If breastmilk wasn't
available, I'd try the Carnation GoodStart first, since the milk proteins
are broken down a bit, and I hear that some babies who are allergic to
milk-based formulas can tolerate the GoodStart, though I don't know from
personal experience. If the GoodStart wasn't okay, personally, I would skip
right to Nutramigen or Alimentum, since the milk proteins are broken down
even further. Cow's milk is a common allergen, as is soy, so a lot of
babies who are allergic to cow's milk formulas are also allergic to soy
formulas.

Don't know how much EBM you could pump, since I never did, but there are a
lot of moms who are able to pump enough for the occasional bottle.

I haven't decided what I am going to do yet, I'll probably call her ped
again Monday. You know, Nolan couldn't handle Enfamil Lipil, either. He
had a lot of gas and spitting up from it but never a reaction like A.'s.
We switched him to Enfamil Lipil Lacto-Free and he did much better. He
did tolerate Nestle Good Start really well, too. I really don't care for
Enfamil at all. The ped. told me to try the same formula again tomorrow,
during clinic hours but I don't see the point, unless for some strange
reason it was a fluke.
I might go ahead and get a small container of Good Start and see how it
goes.

Me too DH's exczema is bad enough that I don't want to risk making
baby's worse than it might possibly already be going to be. There are
so many of us midwives at work who are pregnant, there will be no
shortage or EBM available while we're all on maternity leave!! There
are 5 of us now... well, 4. One had her baby last week at home in
water. One is having triplets - she's 30 weeks tomorrow. Our poor
manager is hoping no one else turns up pregnant, or she'll have no staff
left!
