And ANOTHER school calendar change

We get email today from the principal notifying us that Dec 1, the monday after T'giving, is now a school day whilst before it was a day off. I give up. I'll just send the kids to school when I feel like it, and the heck with the calendar. Seriously?? No district I've ever taught in has made school calendar changes once the calendar is voted on A YEAR IN ADVANCE at the board meeting. The only changes made mid-year that I've heard of are due to excessive amounts of snow days. Usually they will change the last day of school and sometimes (very rarely) change a vacation. In school districts that I have taught in, they sometimes indicate some vacation days throughout the year as potential make up days to let us know that it would be possible for the day to become a day of classes if necessary. I assume that this is not the case here. Aaron |

I wonder because it wouldn't work *at all* here, since probably a good chunk of the parents do not have email. Hence the question. P. Tierney |

But I don't how it really is for the OP. That's why I asked. I wouldn't think that a school district would change holiday dates with less than a month in advance either, so given that, I'm not about to assume that there is any logical standard operating procedure in her district. You know, who wants to get up at 6:20 every morning when you could just cruise in at oh, say 10:00 and drop off the kiddies. :-) Marjorie meh |

Do all of the parents in the district have email connections? Is this how they normally communicate such things? Do we HAVE to have this discussion again. I mean, we've done it twice in the past couple of months. Why don't you just google it and read my responses. Marjorie P. Tierney |

What is their reasoning? Well, their reasoning and my reasoning are two very different things. THEY say that the calendar wasn't finalized until the teacher contract was finalized, which was done about 2 weeks ago, and then there were some 'minor' adjustments. I say that they're clueless gits who just don't understand that people make plans based on the calendar given out day 1. Either way, the changes this year are totally new, having never happened like this before. And hopefully never again. That's crazy and unfair. Just curious, is this a public or private school? Public. |

But you and Hillary are criticizing me, I guess, because I'm not reading every freaking post on the newsgroup before entering into a discussion. That's really logical. P. Tierney |
