NT Screening vs. Amnio
Hi, I am 38 years old and 14 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child. I just had
the Nuchal translucency screening done and just found out my results are within normal range. I understand the older we get, there is an increased risk of genetic disorders. Are the miscarriage risks of an amnio that high? I am a bit confused. |

The risk of miscarriage with an amnio is somewhere in the range of 1 in 100 to 1 in 200 depending on who's doing it. Whether that's too high depends on your personal views. Best wishes, Ericka |

Best wishes, Ericka I think there are some more recent data that put it more in the 1/200 - 1/400 range, but Ericka's the research lady around here! I haven't really looked it up in a year or so. I suspect there's still a lot of variation, though. If I wanted an amnio, I'd look for someone with a lot of experience and a good track record. I suspect that the most skilled practitioners have significantly better odds. hmmm..... I did a quick Medline search. There's a June 2007 German study with 8 years of data, 20,460 subjects, 11,017 controls that found a 1 in 200 risk. A 2004 meta-analysis found a 0.6 percent procedure-related risk of fetal loss. A 2006 study showed a 0.86 percent procedure related risk. There was a Turkish study that showed no additional risk. I didn't do an extensive search, though. Best wishes, Ericka |
