Default Holiday presents for the neighbors kids?

Do you buy them for your toddler's playmates/friends?
It's probably a base question, but I don't know at all.
I don't buy presents for anyone outside the family,
while my spouse buys them for nearly every friend.
So, we've got two different operating systems at

work. Thoughts? Thx.

I only buy them for a couple of close friends children, not the ones we know
only from playgroups and story time.

I never got any gifts for my children's friends. I didn't get gifts
for my OWN friends - just family. However I just got back from a
pre-Xmas party that one of my dd's had - there were three families
with kids - a total of 5 kids. And the kids exchanged presents - each
family gave each kid a present.

Then the parents (including us and one unattached lady - 9 in all) had
a white elephant gift exchange. All the gifts had to be already in
the house - nothing new was purchased.

We picked numbers out of a hat and in order picked a present out of a
pile. If someone picked a gift that someone later in the order liked,
they could take the gift and the person that had it got to pick again.

Some of the gifts were nice, and some were junk that people wanted to
get rid of. My dh got 3 frozen lobster tails. I got a jar of tea
from Harrods and some little purses from Guatemala. My SIL got
kitchen wall plaques (pictures of food). The unattached lady got a
set of dishes that I think I gave my dd a couple of years before -
anyway they were blue and white oriental china.
