Default cold season and being pregnant

Does anyone know how safe it is to use over the counter cold meds when
expecting? Any other kinds of remedies? I have a cold coming on and a nine
month old to chase all day...

From the Pfizer website:

"7. I may be pregnant, can I take any of these medications?
NO. All cold and flu preparations should be avoided in anyone who is
pregnant or suspects they may be pregnant . These drugs have been classified
as a B2 Category- Medicines in Pregnancy."
http://www.pfizer.com.au/Products/Co...cfaq.aspx#preg

This is from the Codral site, but as far as I know anything containing
antihistamines is off limits.

It is not safe to use over the counter medicines. Rather request a
prescription from your doctor. But if you in you first trimester than
its better not to take any medicines that will be harmful, cause
miscarriages occur in this period and also the second trimester. You
will see on the pamphlet that comes with medicines, if it is safe or
not. But rather stay away until you later in your pregnancy.

I came down with a wicked cold between 8-9 weeks pg and fortunately
(unfortunately?) I was on vacation when the worst of it struck....Yes, it
was miserable but here are some things I did to try and make it better
- buy the softest kleenex you can afford (Puffs with Lotion are my thing).
by the time you are on day 3 of blowing your nose, every skin cell on your
face will thank you
- **check with Dr - i'm not sure how safe many teas are** But that said, I
have Traditional Medicinal's "Sore Throat" and "Cough & Cold" herbal teas
and they were a godsend - I would drink them as hot as I could stand them,
with honey.
- chicken noodle soup and other non-medicinal traditional remedies may not
make the cold go away faster but might help you to feel better
- get as much rest as you can (not sure how that will work with a 9 month
old... maybe you can get a sitter in to help out?)
- halls/cough drops can be helpful though make sure you don't get the ones
with aspartame in them (again check with Dr if not sure about this)

Well I do hope that you are feeling better or at least, that you will be
soon!

Hi, I came down with a bad sore throat and colds once or twice during
my last pregnancy, the thing I used is a special tea made of lemon,
ginger and honey - it really seems to work. It definitely helped me
feel better. Here's the recipe.

Fill a teapot full of hot water. Squeeze the juice of half a lemon into
the teapot, then take a piece of ginger about as big as your thumb and
grate it. Put the grated ginger into the teapot. Let steep at least 10
minutes, add honey to taste (I usually put in two heaping tablespoons)
and then strain into tea cup. Drink the entire pot. Once you've made
the tea for the first time you can adjust the lemon and ginger to your
own taste - I like ginger so I tend to use a lot - helped clear the
sinuses!

Definitely made me feel better, and nothing in it will hurt your baby.

Hi oO rach Oo,

I join don_tspamme for her suggestions. It has also worked for me many
times.
If you have a headacke You can take tylenol. Otherwise, you can use
Halls and drink a some tea with lemon. I drink also warm milk with some
honey. And get a lot of rest.
