Default room heater

We still use it when we go camping

Is this an *electric* space heater, or one that burns something? If
it is a burner, it is not safe to use in a room without good
ventilation.

Other strategies:

* if forced air heat, leave that bedroom door open and other bedroom
doors closed so the forced air heat goes there

* adjust the vents / radiators / whatever in the various bedrooms (I
saw on This Old House you can retrofit radiators with individual
temperature controls)

* check the ductwork for leaks/blockages

* add insulating liners to the curtains

* get the kids' mattresses off the floor and away from any walls that
are cold at night (4-6 inches away may be enough, especially if there
is a long curtain between the bed and the wall; any cold air falls
down behind the curtain and under the bed, instead of across the
child)

* dress little kids in cotton pjs plus a fleece sleeper (footed one-
piece pj) on top

Default room heater

It's about 5 degrees colder I think though I never measured it. The
younger one (3yo) doesn't like blankets. The older one (4yo) uses a
blanket but doesn't know how to re-cover herself if the blanket shifts
during the night. She's a light sleeper so gets irritated if the
blanket doesn't stay in place. So on colder nights they end up in my
bed for warmth. Given your list of cautions, I think a room heater may
not be a good idea. It's a carpeted room with curtains and beds on the
floor. Adults won't be present when the heater is working.

Anyone has any other suggestions?

Warmer or layered pj's.
