Injured baby released from hospital

A Syracuse infant who spent more than two weeks in the hospital after
city police say her father punched her has been released to family
members, who could not be reached for comment.

Christiona Shelley, now eight weeks old, left University Hospital
Saturday, hospital officials said today.

Her father, Christopher Shelley, 18, remains in the Justice Center
jail with no bail set. He was charged with felony assault and
endangering the welfare of a child two days after he was accused of
punching the child repeatedly because she was crying.

During that two-day period, police said, he insisted a dog had jumped
on the baby, who suffered multiple bruises to her body and life-
threatening swelling of the brain.

Staff writer Sue Weibezahl filed this report. She can be reached at
or 470-3039.
