Kids playing in the streets by
Mandy Anderson
I'm furious with my neighbors who seem to think the streets in our
subdivision are for playing. Several women who have nothing better to do
petitioned the county to put speed bumps in to slow cars down, yet the
speed limit of 25 mph is still fast enough to kill or injure a child. When
the sun is...

Homework over spring break (long) by
beeswing
Over spring break, the students in our daughter's third grade class were tasked
with writing a report on a country. The Kid has been to Mexico several times,
so she chose to do hers on Mexico. The report consists of about 20 pages of
worksheets asking for information such as population details,...

electroscopillan
I'm a younger single dad (27), whose recently acquired sole custody of my
beautiful 19m.o. son. (he has been in my care for past 7 months). His
mother has essentially abandoned any attempt at contact with him or I, since
I got court order custody. What led to court: she had attempted to...

Surprising Things 9-yos say by
Scott
So DS is sitting at the kitchen table, and out of nowhere
pops "And now for 10 seconds of sex" Well not nowhere,
actually...
We've been watching Monty Python with him. He really
does laugh at some of the skits, but I hope he doesn't
go quoting all of it in school! ;)

CTTS: Books v TV, and the Doctor by
Penny Gaines
The 8yo has worked out that lots of films that Mummy watches with them
were originally books - eg Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings etc.
Currently the new "Doctor Who" has started showing. We were watching
it together, and the Doctor was being deliberately obtruse about his
home planet.
The 8yo...

Still believes?! by
Nevermind
I have an almost-7-YO who still believes in the Easter Bunny. I'm
half-inclined to let the truth slip out. her older brother stopped
believing in the EB when he was in preschool and asked about Santa (not
just those early questions, but real questions to which he definitely
wanted real answers) in...

Johnniec
My 7 yr. old was eating a taco salad at school during lunch, and choked
on one of the chips. It was stuck in this throat for a few seconds,
then he choked it out. It scared the heck out of him. I happened to
have be there with him when it happened, although I didn't realize it
was happening until...

Learning to keyboard (type) - recommend software for older kids by
Banty
One of the summer assignments (from me) for my 11 year old son going into 7th
grade next year is that he learn to keyboard. It would help him with
assignments, now that some can be turned in typed (his handwriting is
atrocious), and he's falling into a hunt-and-peck two-finger habit when he...

narrow shoes by
Karen G
Have any of you tracked down narrow shoes for kids recently? My
preschooler is almost 5 and wears a 11 1/2 N shoe. I have been able to
get a few styles from Ked's and Nordstrom's carries a few styles. All
of them cost a small fortune though. Any suggestions?
For the record, the Narrow shoes...

How to deal with interfering grandparents? by
Abi
Hi,
I was wondering whether anyone can advise re my DH's parents -
grandparents to the baby girl I have just recently had. I find them
incredibly interfering - they keep offering unwanted advice like their
word is gospel, and seem to delight when I do something wrong. My DH
is always on the phone...

Kid going away with friends by
Nevermind
My 9 YO has been invited to go about 12 hours away for an entire week
with the family of a friend of his. This friend is a good friend, but
not someone he spends a ton of time with. Two overnight get-togethers
have gone well. My son is very sociable but also gets cranky and needs
alone time on a...

Would volunteering be a conflict? by
beeswing
x-no-archive: yes
There's a private school locally that I wouldn't mind supporting, and they've
listed that they need volunteers, including committee members for a committee
I'd be interested in. I wouldn't mind volunteering the time, but it is true
that we're likely to want to apply to the school...

Petitioning to make a TV show more realisitc discipline by
[email protected]
AOL now doesn't have newsgroup access, but I wanted to come back to
misc.kids once more; I frequented it years ago when there was no need
to moderate it. I'm using the name I rarely use but that is used for
IM'ing and such right now.
The reason I post is because I have begun a campaign to get...

parenting by
dan
It's hard to let go of one's children after taking care of them from
conception and then on through their schooling. Our offspring learn
from a variety of sources which become more varied as they grow older.
For parents it has to be a case of allowing the independence while
maintaining the love. It...
