Update - Nic H (A bit long)
My medical coverage started Saturday *sigh of relief* and my first
Doctors visit was yesterday (Tuesday). I'd been told to choose a family practice, not sure why since when I got there she told me I needed an OB and that family practice don't "treat" pregnancies. Well it wasn't a complete waste of time, apparently, I have the worst sinus infection she'd ever seen so I'm now on Amoxicillin. Weird, it was the same snotty nose feeling I'd had with my first baby, and I thought it was normal LOL I got a LOT of flack over the fact that I'd not seen anyone in 16 weeks, they seemed very ignorant to the fact that while paying off the first $2,000 doctor bill, I had to wait to get insurance. Ah well, I guess it's hard for some people to understand how the other half lives. They gave me crap about leaving this sinus thing go too, that in "this country" when you have an ailment, you see a doctor right away to get treatment, you don't "tough it out." GRRRRRRRR! The lady who took me to the appointment, a nurse from a county program for pregnant women who is now a dear friend, insisted we go to a local family planning office and see a doctor she knows to see if he'd see me. We did that, and he was hesitant to take me this late (24 weeks) but agreed after some reassurance that I was perfectly healthy and not "sue happy" LOL I'm not sure at this point how comfortable I am with that, I'm trying to see it from all points of view. So, I now have a slip for bloodwork and urine, I have to be there tomorrow 2 hours after breakfast for the blood draw (I'm assuming that's a blood sugar thing) and the order is - Chemistry 2 hr pp, Blood types (ABO, Rh), Coombs - Indirect, RPR, Rubella, Hepatitis B, HIV, CBC with diff, CF screening, toxoplasmosis and two types of urine testing. Not sure what all of these are, but I assume he feels they are necessary even though I had most of these done routinely in October last year before hubby got out of the military, some done at my ER visit in Jan, and immigration required some of these also. Can't hurt I guess, and though I'm not a fan of the blood draw, my nurse friend will be there and insists she'll make sure they don't screw my veins up again like in January. He also ordered an ultrasound for Friday, for gestational age, an anatomical survey and gender. They did ask if I'd wanted to know, and I do indeed. 32oz of water before *sigh* so I'll wear a pad or something, I told her I'm having problems with leakage if I sneeze or laugh/cough, but I have to drink the water anyway LOL This is EXTREMELY exciting for me, and although hubby can't be there, he really wants to know. Super Sophie says girl, my nurse friend says girl, my aunt and sister say boy... I have no clue whatsoever. I'm a little irritated that the receptionist buggered up my EDD because she didn't count cycle length, they did that last time and I held fast to the EDD I worked out, and she was born ON THAT DAY! ;-) I'm scheduled to be then screened on the 11th, I'm assuming it's like a million questions type stuff, and two days later I will FINALLY be seeing the OB. He comes highly recommended, but I'd prefer a midwife, I guess it's entirely possible he will be great, I'll have to wait and see. I must make up my mind fast though, the deductible which has to be paid BEFORE delivery is $500 plus $25 copays. It's not what I'd expected and not as much as no insurance at all, but close enough! I've also learned that the local hospital has a birthing room, which would be great. This Doctor is Asian, as were all of my doctors back home, I hope he has the same lovely, soft handed and spoken manner. I'll be comfortable to a degree before I even show up for the appointment because of his origin LOL I guess this will all come down to how open this OB is to letting me do what *I* want and feel I need to do. I just hope he sees this for what it is, *I* am having a baby, I am NOT sick and I certainly don't need treatment LOL So, having said that I have a question, do you guys think it would be premature of me to show him a birth plan and see what his reaction is? I don't want to dismiss his expertise unless I think he's unwilling to work with me... Thanks in advance for your opinions on showing my new OB my birth plan, it's VERY nice to be able to have so many people to put my head together with! Nic EDD 23 AUG 04 |
