Default radiation pregnancy

I hope it's ok to post here. If not please disregard. I currently work
at an international airport around machines that give off possible
radiation. The doctor I'm seeing along with a speciailist recommends me
avoiding this type of exposure. It could create possible risks to the
fetus they believe. My employer is saying there is no risk. Stuck
between a rock and a hard place. No job with this type of possible
exposure is worth risking a miracle. I agree with the advice from the
doctor and the specialist unless there is data to prove beyond a
reasonable doubt. Can anyone with information regarding this topic
please email me at Thanks in advance for any
help you may have to offer. Liz

Well, this is pretty simple to solve, really. What are the machines in
question? Get the manufacturer name and machine ID number or whatever, and
contact the manufacturer and find out what kind of scatter radiation comes
off those machines. I'm assuming you are not required to actually be
passing through the radiation beam, of course. That would be a whole
different story. It would seem to me that these machines are built with
appropriate shielding. Do the people working with the machines wear
dosimeter badges? If not, then it would also seem to me that the expected
radiation dose to a worker in the vicinity would be so low as to not be
measurable, in which case it would be safe. What information did your
physician have with respect to the particular machine when he told you it
was unsafe? Inquiring minds want to know

Good luck!

Thank You for your responses ! here is the situation ! I work on these
machines everyday it's not an occasional pass through ! I can go
through and stand by these machines from 4-8 hours a day. I looked up
the machines on the internet and they say they are safe but another
paper from the Government say they are 80% below FDA permissable
standards. so what exactly is that suppose to mean? the are 20% unsafe
or 80% under standards? Were all aware that that the FDA has approved
many products that are on the market daily, then later found to be
unsafe. these machines have only been under testing in the US since the
begining of the Transportation Security Administration which is just
over a year old ! So in my opinion they don't have a clue. and we are
not about to be Government test dummies with our baby. and how can we
trust these machines as employees when they were mass produced in
Germany to satisfy President Bush so the country would be more at ease
about all of the terrorist activity. There are many women that come
through the airport daily that have been doctor recommended to bypass
that part of the screening and have a pat-down which is another form of
the same screening.
The TSA is saying that I may be denied work because my doctor does not
want me around these machines. in that case I can use my vacation and
sick leave until it's gone. well that's about 2 weeks and the baby is
due in september.... The Governent,in other words is going to throw
their own employee out on the street without a dime and a baby??????????
I just don't get it !

Thanks,
Liz

Just an FYI...
Doing a TTT post won't push your post on usenet. That only works to
push threads in the webtv only alt.discuss forums.

I'm sorry, but if your doctor says that you shouldn't be near them all day
long, and you agree, then unless they can find you some sort of work in
another area, they may not have much choice. I wonder if you could go on
disability? I mean you aren't disabled, but the pregnancy isn't allowing
you to do that particular job any longer.

Good luck.

I think you have to do some research. I wouldn't take
the doctor's off the cuff remark as gospel. Many doctors will
just say to avoid something if they have *any* suspicion that
it *might* be problematic, without any basis for that
recommendation whatsoever. They'd rather not risk *anything*.
However, many things that are advised against are probably
completely safe.
I would exercise caution, since you would be having
quite a lot of exposure. I think you need to get the technical
specifications for the machines and find out precisely what
they're emitting and at what level. Once you know the precise
terms, you can search to see what is known about the effects
of that sort of radiation at those exposure levels. You will
either find that that scenario has been tested and found safe
(in which case no problem with working), has been tested and
found unsafe (in which case a note from your doctor with
documentation should get you some sort of disability situation),
or you'll find that it hasn't been tested (in which case you
should have a shot at arguing that since it hasn't been
tested and your doctor is recommending against it, you
shouldn't have to experiment on your baby).

You need real information here, and that starts with
getting the technical specifications of these machines.

Best wishes,
Ericka

Webtv posters use it to push a post/thread.
TTT stands for To The Top.

When posting in the webtv only newsgroups, an entire thread gets
pushed to the front of a discussion group, even the posts you've read.

Urgh. It really is an awful technology!
