Cough medicine (otc) ?
Nan wrote:
Okay, I've been fighting a head/chest cold for well over a week, back to back with the stomach virus that's been going around this area. Coughing is driving me *insane*, and keeping me up half the night, to boot. My throat is now raw and sore from the coughing and my stomach muscles (such as they are, lol) are tender and sore from coughing. My doctor's office today told me Tylenol sinus or Benadryl sinus were okay, but that's it. Well, if I *had* sinus issues, this would be okay, but other than a little bit sniffly, I'm okay in that dept. Anyone got any advice on the various cough preparations out there? I seem to recall Robitussin (plain, not DM or CF) being okay when I was pregnant with dd 4 years ago, but I don't really recall. Tia! Nan Codiene (sp?) is a good cough suppressant. Can your doctor write you a prescription for Tylenol 3? -- Brigitte aa #2145 http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/j/joshuaandkaterina/ http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrow...elected=782084 "Readers are plentiful; thinkers are rare." ~ Harriet Martineau |

Can your doctor write you a prescription for Tylenol 3? I had a horrific cough a few months ago, I did take Robitussin at the advice of my doctor (can't remember which one, though, I honestly don't recall if it was the plain, it might have been the DM, my impression was that since it isn't alcohol based its ok), but it didn't touch the cough and I was up for nights on end hacking. Finally I went to the doc and they gave me prescription tylenol with codeine and it worked wonders, what a relief. cara |

I thought so! We'll be out running errands after I get off work this afternoon so I'll pick some up if I can't convince the doc to call in an Rx for something stronger. Nan Good. I hope you get something soon that makes you feel better. |

Good. I hope you get something soon that makes you feel better. I did... Tussionex, which has a mild narcotic, so that should enable me to get *some* sleep tonight :-) Unfortunately, it's quite expensive and not on the "approved list" for my insurance, so the pharmacy was able to get an approval for an emergency 3 day supply and I'll need to get prior approval if I need more. By then I'll have been to my OB appt and she can either give me an Rx for something else, or I'll be feeling better and not need it. Nan I've never heard of that. I just started a cough myself a few days ago, today it's making my abs hurt so I'll be picking up some Robitussin |

"Nan" wrote I did... Tussionex, which has a mild narcotic, so that should enable me to get *some* sleep tonight :-) I actually have this in my medicine cabinet...so this what your ob allowed you to have? I'll double check with mine but it;s good to know it is probably ok. Sudafed works for me for nasal congestion, but I get really worried when I get chest congestion because it lingers and makes me feel panicky like I am choking. Whenever I get sick- cold, flu, anything, it seems to settle in my chest. Traditionally every year I get a cold or flu that has bad enough respiratory effects where I have to use nasal spray, prescription antihistamines and decongestants, an albuterol inhaler, and Tussionex and course of Prednisone. Not *all* at the same time but all during the same illness. Tussionex is the only thing that helps my cough and chest congestion and I usually only have to use it for a few days. This year, during pregnancy, luckily, I haven't had anything that bad. I had a cold but all I used was Sudafed sparingly and I got over it pretty quickly. I haven't been sick enough to even think of an inhaler or Tusssionex, knock on wood! ANd thankfully I am not getting many bad headaches so Tylenol is working for them, for the first time in my life! No migraines. If I can just make it about 3 more months! Jill |

"Sophie" wrote I've never heard of that. I just started a cough myself a few days ago, today it's making my abs hurt so I'll be picking up some Robitussin Tussionex is good stuff, and it is mild. I haven't checked with my OB specifically, but I think it would be ok for pregnancy just because of what it is- it is a hydrocodone cough syrup, and very mild. So for example, if a doctor would approve a narcotic such as Darvocet or Lortab/Vicodin for a short term need I'd think they'd have no prob with Tussionex. Tussionex may make some people sleepy and help them sleep, but with me it's so mild I don't feel much of anything when I take it except I stop coughing. Actually, it makes me very very slightly too edgy to sleep, which makes sense because I can't sleep when I take a 5mg narcotic pain reliever either. I've had sore bleeding throat before and ended up NOT using the prescription pain reliever, just because I can't sleep when I take them, and I need sleep when I am sick...My doctor told me that mpst people tend to get sleepy with them though. |
